Materials

• Fingering weight (Category 1) cotton yarn in Mustard Yellow, Dark Teal, Mint Green, Orange, and Cream
• 2.0 mm (US B/1) crochet hook
• Two 4mm black safety eyes
• Polyester fiberfill stuffing
• Metal keychain ring with chain
• Small silver star bead or sequin
• Yarn needle, scissors, and stitch markers

Instructions

Step 1: The Egg Pod Container

Using Mustard Yellow yarn, start from the bottom of the egg pod:

• Rnd 1: 6 sc in a MR (6)
• Rnd 2: inc in each st around (12)
• Rnd 3: [sc, inc] x6 (18)
• Rnd 4: [2 sc, inc] x6 (24)
• Change to Dark Teal
• Rnd 5: [3 sc, inc] x6 (30)
• Change to Orange
• Rnd 6: Working in BLO, sc around (30)
• Change to Mustard Yellow
• Rnd 7-8: sc around (30)

Now, we will create the front opening (window) of the egg. We will work in back-and-forth rows for this section:

• Row 9: ch 1, turn, sc in the next 18 sts (leave the remaining 12 sts unworked for the front opening)
• Row 10-18: Continue working in rows of 18 sc. Alternate yarn colors every 2 rows (Orange, Dark Teal, and Mustard Yellow) to replicate the colorful striped pattern shown in the image.

Now, close the top of the egg window:

• Rnd 19: ch 12 (to bridge the front window gap), then sc across the 18 sts from the back panel (30 total sts)
• Rnd 20: [3 sc, dec] x6 (24)
• Rnd 21: [2 sc, dec] x6 (18)
• Rnd 22: [sc, dec] x6 (12)
• Rnd 23: [dec] x6 (6)
• Change to Dark Teal
• Hanging Loop: ch 8, sl st into the opposite side of Rnd 23 to form the loop. Fasten off and weave in all yarn ends.
• Window Border: Attach Dark Teal yarn to any stitch on the edge of the window opening and work sc evenly all around the perimeter of the opening to create a clean, framed edge. Fasten off.

Step 2: The Baby Dragon

Using Mint Green yarn, construct the dragon’s head and body in one piece:

• Rnd 1: 6 sc in a MR (6)
• Rnd 2: inc in each st around (12)
• Rnd 3: [sc, inc] x6 (18)
• Rnd 4-7: sc around (18)
• Fit safety eyes between Rnds 5 & 6, leaving about 4 stitches in between.
• Rnd 8: [sc, dec] x6 (12) – Stuff the head firmly with fiberfill.
• Rnd 9: [dec] x6 (6)
• Rnd 10 (Body): inc in each st around (12)
• Rnd 11-13: sc around (12)
• Rnd 14: [sc, dec] x4 (8) – Stuff the body firmly.
• Rnd 15: [dec] x4 (4). Fasten off and sew the small opening closed.

Step 3: Dragon Details & Assembly

• Snout: Using Mint Green, 5 sc in a MR. Fasten off, leaving a tail to sew onto the face centered below the eyes.
• Horns (Make 2): Using Cream yarn, ch 3, sl st in the 2nd ch from hook, sc in the last ch. Sew to the top of the head.
• Wings (Make 2): Using Mint Green, ch 5, turn, sc in next 4 chs. ch 1, turn, sc 2, sl st 1. Fasten off, leaving a tail to sew onto the back of the body.
• Tail: Using Mint Green, ch 8, sc in the 2nd ch from hook and each ch across. Sew to the base of the spine.

Step 4: Final Touches

• Place a small pinch of Orange yarn fluff or felted wool at the bottom inside of the egg container to act as a fire nest.
• Nestle the baby dragon inside the egg pod. Secure it with a small dab of craft glue or a few stitches at the back to keep it in place.
• Stitch or glue the tiny silver star sequin to the dragon’s front paws.
• Attach the metal keychain ring securely to the Dark Teal loop at the top of the egg. Your dragon keychain is ready to accompany you on your adventures!
