Instructions
The backpack is constructed in pieces and then assembled. We’ll start with the front panel, then the back, gusset, and features.
Front Panel (White & Red)
Using White yarn:
- Row 1: Ch 31, sc in 2nd ch from hook and in each ch across. (30 sc)
- Rows 2-25: Ch 1, turn, sc in each st across. (30 sc)
- Do not FO. We will now add the red border and ears.
Using Red yarn, join to the corner of the white panel where you left off. Work around the entire white panel:
- Round 1 (Border): Ch 1, *sc evenly along the side (approx 25 sc), 3 sc in corner, sc across the bottom (30 sc), 3 sc in corner, sc evenly along the other side (approx 25 sc), 3 sc in corner, sc across the top (30 sc), 3 sc in corner*. Sl st to first sc. Adjust stitch count as needed to keep the panel flat and even.
- Round 2 (Shape Ears): Ch 1, sc in each st around for the bottom and sides. When you reach the top section where the ears will be, work as follows:
- For the first ear: Sc in next 5 sts, [inc, sc] x 2, sc in next 5 sts.
- Sc across the top middle section (approx 10-12 sc) between ears.
- For the second ear: Sc in next 5 sts, [inc, sc] x 2, sc in next 5 sts.
- Continue sc around the rest of the panel. Sl st to join.
- Round 3 (Ears definition): Ch 1, sc in each st around the bottom and sides. For the ears, sc in each st over the raised ear sections, maintaining the shape. Sl st to join. FO.
Back Panel (Red)
Using Red yarn:
- Row 1: Ch 31, sc in 2nd ch from hook and in each ch across. (30 sc)

Side & Bottom Gusset (Red)
Using Red yarn:
- Row 1: Ch 7, sc in 2nd ch from hook and in each ch across. (6 sc)
- Rows 2-80 (or until desired length to go around the front and back panel perimeter): Ch 1, turn, sc in each st across. (6 sc)
- FO, leaving a long tail for sewing.

Assembly
- Attach Features to Front Panel: Using yarn tails, sew the Black eyes and Yellow nose onto the white face section. Embroider the Black whiskers. Sew the Red bow onto the upper right ear.
- Attach Gusset to Front Panel: Pin the long Red gusset strip around the perimeter of the Front Panel (excluding the very top edge). Start and end at the bottom center. Using a yarn needle and the tail, whip stitch or mattress stitch the gusset to the Front Panel.
- Attach Gusset to Back Panel: Pin the remaining edge of the gusset strip to the Back Panel, aligning all edges. Stitch securely. Leave the very top edge open for the bag opening.
- Attach Straps: Sew one end of each strap to the top corners of the Back Panel, about 1-2 inches in from the side. Sew the other end of each strap to the bottom corners of the Back Panel. Adjust length as desired for the child.
- Attach Top Handle: Fold the Top Handle in half to form a loop. Sew it to the center top of the Back Panel, inside the bag opening.
- Weave in all remaining ends securely.
