Materials

• Lace weight yarn or embroidery floss (Navy Blue, Yellow, White, Black, Pink, Green, and Red)
• 1.25 mm crochet hook (or size needed for a tight tension)
• Polyester fiberfill stuffing
• Miniature wooden skewers or toothpicks (cut to size for the lid detail)
• Tiny decorative button for the latch
• Keychain ring, jump rings, and jewelry pliers
• Tapestry needle, craft glue, and scissors

Instructions

Bento Box Base (Navy Blue Yarn):

Round 1: ch 11. sc in 2nd ch from hook, sc in next 8 ch, 3 sc in the last chain. Turn to work along the opposite side of the chain: sc in next 8 ch, 2 sc in the last ch. (22 sts)

Round 2: inc, sc in next 8, inc in next 3, sc in next 8, inc in next 2. (28 sts)

Round 3: sc, inc, sc in next 9, inc, sc, inc, sc, inc, sc in next 9, inc, sc, inc. (34 sts)

Round 4: In BLO, sc in each stitch around. (34 sts)

Rounds 5-9: sc in each stitch around. (34 sts)

Fasten off and weave in ends. Sew a tiny loop of thread on the front center to act as a button latch, and sew a tiny doll button below it.

Bento Box Lid (Yellow Yarn):

Rounds 1-3: Repeat the instructions for the Bento Box Base. (34 sts)

Round 4: In BLO, sc in each stitch around. (34 sts)

Fasten off. Cut several miniature bamboo sticks/skewers to the width of the lid and glue them parallel to each other on top of the lid to mimic a wooden cover.

Onigiri Rice Ball (White and Black Yarn):

Using White yarn: ch 2.

Row 1: 3 sc in the 2nd ch from hook, ch 1, turn. (3 sts)

Row 2: inc, sc, inc, ch 1, turn. (5 sts)

Row 3: sc across, ch 1, turn. (5 sts)

Row 4: inc, sc in next 3, inc, ch 1, turn. (7 sts)

Row 5: sc across. (7 sts)

Make two identical white triangles. Stitch them together around the edge with a small amount of fiberfill inside to create a puffy 3D triangle. Using Black yarn, chain 3, work 4 rows of 2 sc to make a small black rectangle. Sew the black rectangle around the bottom edge of the triangle to represent the seaweed wrapper.

Octopus Sausage (Pink Yarn):

Round 1: 6 sc in a magic ring.

Round 2: [sc, inc] repeating around. (9 sts)

Legs: [ch 4, sl st down the chain, sl st into the next stitch of the body] repeat 8 times to create the splayed octopus legs. Fasten off and sew tiny black eyes using black embroidery floss.

ch 10, dc in the 3rd ch from hook and in each chain across. Fasten off. Roll the flat piece tightly into a spiral cylinder and stitch through the layers to secure the roll shape.

Broccoli and Tomato Fillers (Green and Red Yarn):

For the Broccoli: Using Green yarn, make a magic ring. [ch 3, sl st into the ring] repeat 5 times to create a ruffled floret texture. Pull the ring tight and fasten off.

For the Tomato: Using Red yarn, make a magic ring and work 6 sc. Work 1 round of sc around, then dec 3 times to close. Fasten off and sew a tiny green star on top to represent the stem.

Assembly:

Arrange the onigiri, octopus sausage, tamagoyaki, broccoli, and tomato securely inside the blue bento box base. Use hot glue or fabric glue to fix the pieces in place. Attach the yellow lid partially open at one corner. Finally, attach your keychain hardware through the top corner of the bento box base.
