Materials

• Sport weight yarn in Cream, Light Pink, Medium Pink, and Yellow
• 2.25 mm (US B-1) crochet hook
• Black embroidery floss for the sleepy eyes
• Fiberfill stuffing

Instructions

Crescent Moon (in Cream Yarn)

The moon is worked in the round from one tip to the other, expanding in the middle and decreasing at the end to form a natural curve.

• Rnd 1: Start with a magic ring, work 4 sc into the ring (4)
• Rnd 2: [sc, inc] twice (6)
• Rnd 3: [2 sc, inc] twice (8)
• Rnd 4: [3 sc, inc] twice (10)
• Rnd 5: [4 sc, inc] twice (12)
• Rnd 6: [5 sc, inc] twice (14)
• Rnd 7-10: Work 1 sc in each st around (14)
• Rnd 11: [6 sc, inc] twice (16)
• Rnd 12: Work 1 sc in each st around (16)
• Rnd 13: [7 sc, inc] twice (18)
• Rnd 14-20: Work increases on one side only to curve the shape: sc 8, inc, inc, sc 8 (20). Start stuffing the tip lightly.

Sleeping Axolotl Head & Body (in Light Pink Yarn)

We will construct the head and body in one piece to reduce sewing.

• Rnd 4: [2 sc, inc] around (24)
• Rnd 5: [3 sc, inc] around (30)
• Rnd 6-11: sc around (30)
• Rnd 12: [3 sc, dec] around (24)
• Rnd 13: [2 sc, dec] around (18)
• Rnd 14: [sc, dec] around (12). Stuff the head firmly.
• Rnd 15 (Body Transition): [sc, inc] around (18)
• Rnd 16-22: sc around (18)
• Rnd 23: [4 sc, dec] around (15)
• Rnd 24: [3 sc, dec] around (12)
• Rnd 25-28: sc around to form the tail, gradually flattening the tip (12)
• Rnd 29: dec around (6). Fasten off and weave in the tail end.

Gills & Details (in Medium Pink Yarn)

Make 6 gills (3 for each side of the head).

• Join yarn directly to the side of the head. Chain 4, sl st in the second ch from hook, sc in next 2 ch, sl st back into the head to secure. Repeat to create three small frilled branches on each side.

Assembly & Embroidery

• Using black embroidery floss, stitch two sleeping curved lines for the closed eyes on the axolotl’s face. Add tiny pink blush lines just below the eyes.
• With yellow yarn, crochet a tiny star (MR, [ch 2, sl st in 2nd ch, sl st into ring] x 5) and sew it onto the moon.
• Embroider small white sparkle ‘plus’ signs across the moon’s surface.
• Position the sleeping axolotl nestled inside the curve of the moon and sew securely in place.
