Instructions
This pattern is worked in separate panels using the classic granny stitch technique, then joined together to form the fanny pack.
Main Body Panel (Make 1)
This panel forms the front, bottom, and part of the back. It is worked in rows of granny clusters.
Using C1 (Forest Green), ch 42.
Row 1 (RS): Dc in 4th ch from hook (counts as 1st dc of GC), 2 dc in same ch. *Sk 2 ch, GC in next ch.* Rep from * to * across to last 3 ch. Sk 2 ch, 1 dc in last ch. Turn. (13 GCs, 1 dc at each end)
Row 2 (WS): Ch 3 (counts as 1st dc), 2 dc in the space between the first dc and the first GC of previous row. *GC in next sp between GCs.* Rep from * to * across. 3 dc in the space before the turning ch-3 of previous row. Turn. (14 GCs)
This Row 2 is the standard granny stripe row. For all subsequent granny stripe rows, you will work GCs into the spaces between the GCs of the previous row.

Side Gusset Panels (Make 2)
These panels provide the depth for the bag at the sides. They are shaped slightly trapezoidally. You can achieve this by starting with a wider chain and decreasing, or by making a straight panel and manipulating it during joining.
For a straightforward rectangular side gusset:
Using C1 (Forest Green), ch 12.
Row 1 (RS): Dc in 4th ch from hook, 2 dc in same ch. Sk 2 ch, GC in next ch. Sk 2 ch, 1 dc in last ch. Turn. (2 GCs)

Continue working Row 2 for 8-10 rows total, changing colors every 2 rows using the sequence: C1, C2, C1, C3, C1, C4, etc. FO, leaving a long tail for sewing.

Using C1 (Forest Green), ch 8.
Row 1: Sc in 2nd ch from hook and in each ch across. Ch 1, turn. (7 sc)
Row 2: Sc in each st across. Ch 1, turn. (7 sc)
Rep Row 2 until strap reaches desired length (approx. 40-50 inches for an adult fanny pack), changing colors every 2 rows using the sequence: C1, C2, C1, C3, C1, C4, etc. FO.
Assembly
- Lay the Main Body Panel flat. Place the Back Top Panel onto one end of the Main Body Panel, aligning the edges. Using C1 yarn and a yarn needle, whip stitch or slip stitch the two panels together along one long edge to create the full back section.
- Fold the combined main body/back panel lengthwise to form the general shape of the fanny pack. The Back Top Panel should be at the top edge of the back, and the Main Body Panel will wrap around for the front and bottom.
- Take one Side Gusset Panel. Align its edges with the side edges of the Main Body Panel and the Back Top Panel. Carefully sew it in place using C1 yarn and a yarn needle, joining the raw edges. Repeat for the second Side Gusset Panel on the opposite side. This will create the 3D shape of the bag.
- Attach the Flap Panel: Align the top edge of the Flap Panel with the top edge of the Back Top Panel. Sew securely using C1 yarn.
- Add D-rings: Attach one D-ring to each upper corner of the Back Top Panel (where the strap will connect). You can either crochet around the D-ring with sc, or sew it securely with a small tab of crocheted fabric.
- Attach Leather Strap and Buckle: Sew the leather strap with buckle onto the center front of the Flap Panel. This can be done with a sewing needle and strong thread.
- Weave in all loose ends securely.
- Thread the crocheted Strap through the D-rings. Adjust to fit.
