Materials

• Beige/Off-White cotton yarn (Sport/DK weight)
• Blue cotton yarn (Sport/DK weight)
• Orange/Yellow cotton yarn (Sport/DK weight)
• Brown cotton yarn (Sport/DK weight) – small amount for perch
• 2.0mm Crochet Hook
• Small amount of polyester fiberfill
• Tapestry needle
• Scissors
• Keychain ring with chain
• Small wooden beads (2-3)
• Small metal key charm

Instructions

Bird (Blue & Orange)

• Body (Start with Blue yarn)

  • R1: 6 sc in MR (6)
  • R2: Inc in each st around (12)
  • R3: (sc, inc) x 6 (18)
  • R4-R6: Sc in each st around (18)
  • Change to Orange/Yellow yarn for belly.
  • R7: Sc in each st around (18)
  • R8: (sc, dec) x 6 (12)
  • Stuff firmly.
  • R9: Dec x 6 (6)
  • FO, weave in ends.

• Beak (Embroider with Yellow yarn)

  • Using a tapestry needle, embroider a small ‘V’ shape for the beak on the blue head section.

• Eyes (Embroider with Black yarn – tiny stitches)

  • Embroider two small dots for eyes on the blue head section, above the beak.

Perch (Brown yarn)

• Ch 8.
• Sc in 2nd ch from hook and in each ch across (7 sc).
• FO, leave a long tail for attaching.

Birdcage (Beige/Off-White yarn)

• Base

  • R1: 6 sc in MR (6)
  • R2: Inc in each st around (12)
  • R3: (sc, inc) x 6 (18)
  • R4: (sc 2, inc) x 6 (24)
  • R5: (sc 3, inc) x 6 (30)

• Lower Walls

  • R6 (BLO): Sc in each st around (30)
  • R7-R8: Sc in each st around (30)

• Bar Section

  • R9: Ch 1, *sc in next 2 sts, ch 5, skip 3 sts* (repeat 6 times around). Sl st to join. (You should have 6 ‘windows’)
  • R10: Ch 1, *sc in next 2 sts (into the scs of previous round), sc in first ch of ch-5, ch 3, sc in last ch of ch-5, skip to next 2 scs* (repeat 6 times around). Sl st to join. This creates a narrower top connection for the bars.
  • R11: Ch 1, *sc in next 2 sts, 1 sc in first ch of ch-3, 1 sc in ch-3 space, 1 sc in last ch of ch-3, sc in next 2 sts* (repeat 6 times around). Sl st to join. This creates a solid upper rim.

• Dome Top

  • R12: (sc 3, dec) x 6 (24)
  • R13: (sc 2, dec) x 6 (18)

  • R15: Dec x 6 (6)

• Hanging Loop

  • Ch 10, sl st into the opposite side of the R15 opening to form a loop.
  • FO, weave in ends.

Tassel (Beige/Off-White yarn)

• Cut several strands of yarn approximately 4 inches long.
• Fold them in half.
• Using a separate piece of yarn, tie a knot around the folded section near the top.
• Wrap yarn around the top section multiple times to form the tassel head. Secure and trim excess.
• Trim the bottom loops to create even fringe.

Assembly

• Using the long tail from the perch, sew the perch inside the cage, centering it horizontally and about halfway up the lower solid wall.
• Place the crocheted bird onto the perch, securing it with a few stitches if desired.
• Attach the keychain ring to the crocheted loop on top of the cage.
• Thread the small wooden beads onto the keychain chain, followed by the metal key charm.
• Attach the crocheted tassel to a separate link on the keychain chain, or directly to the keychain ring.
• Weave in all remaining loose ends.
