Crochet Pattern: Harlequin Jester Doll

Materials

• Worsted weight yarn in: Red, Black, White, Skin Tone (e.g., beige), Light Brown, Dark Brown.
• Crochet Hook: 3.0mm (or hook size to achieve a tight fabric)
• Safety Eyes: 6mm or 8mm (black)
• Polyester Fiberfill for stuffing

Instructions

Legs (Make 2 – one Red/Black, one Black/Red)
Note: We will start with the boot tip color, then change to the main leg color. The first leg will be mainly Red with Black tip, the second Black with Red tip. Stuff as you go.

First Leg (Red main, Black tip):

Using Black yarn:

Row 1: 6 sc in MR [6]

Switch to Red yarn:

Second Leg (Black main, Red tip):

Using Red yarn:

Switch to Black yarn:

Body
Note: You will be working with both Red and Black yarn simultaneously, changing colors mid-round for the vertical split. Carry the unused yarn loosely on the inside of your work. For the ‘diamond’ shapes on the pants (Rows 25-27), this requires carrying yarn and changing colors (intarsia technique), which can be advanced. Alternatively, you can crochet these rounds in solid Red/Black and embroider the shapes later.

Joining Legs:

Row 17: From the Black leg (right leg), ch 2. Join to the Red leg (left leg) with sc. (work 12 sc around Red leg), sc in each of the 2 chs, (work 12 sc around Black leg), sc in each of the 2 chs on the other side. [28]

Rows 19-24: (14 sc Red, 14 sc Black) [28] (6 rounds) – Start stuffing firmly.

Switch to Skin Tone yarn:

Insert safety eyes between R36-R37, about 6-7 stitches apart. Embroider eye mask in black above and below eyes using black yarn or embroidery floss.

Facial Details: With black embroidery floss, embroider eyebrows and a small smile. Using pink embroidery floss or blush, add rosy cheeks below the eyes.

Mallet Head (Light Brown)

Using Light Brown yarn:

Stuff firmly.

Mallet Handle (Dark Brown)

Using Dark Brown yarn:

Row 1: 6 sc in MR [6]

Rows 2-8: sc around [6] (7 rounds)

FO, leaving a long tail for sewing. Do not stuff.

Assembly:

1. Hat: Pin the Red hat point on the left side of the head and the Black hat point on the right side. Sew securely in place. The base of the hat points should be positioned slightly above the safety eyes.

2. Arms: Sew the Red/Black arm (Red hand) to the left shoulder, and the Black/Red arm (Black hand) to the right shoulder, matching the body’s color split.

3. Collar: Wrap the white collar around the doll’s neck and sew the ends together at the back. Then, stitch the collar lightly to the doll’s body/neck to keep it in place.

4. Mallet: Sew the mallet handle to the mallet head. Then, attach the mallet to one of the doll’s hands.

5. Finishing: Weave in any remaining loose ends. Make sure all parts are securely attached.
