Materials

• Lace weight yarn or embroidery floss in Light Green, Cream, Brown, Blue, and White
• 0.75mm to 1.00mm crochet hook
• Two 2mm black safety eyes or beads
• Polyester fiberfill stuffing
• Thin craft wire (for the violin bow and antenna reinforcement)
• Keychain ring and connector clasp
• Sewing needle and scissors

Instructions

Head (In Light Green):

• Rnd 1: 6 sc in MR (6)
• Rnd 2: [inc] x6 (12)
• Rnd 3: [sc, inc] x6 (18)
• Rnd 4: [2 sc, inc] x6 (24)
• Rnd 5-10: sc in each st around (24)
• Insert safety eyes between Rnds 7 and 8, leaving 5 sts in between. Embroider the tiny smile and rosy cheeks.
• Rnd 11: [2 sc, dec] x6 (18)
• Stuff firmly with fiberfill.
• Rnd 12: [sc, dec] x6 (12)
• Rnd 13: [dec] x6 (6)
• Fasten off, weave in ends.

Antennae (Make 2, in Light Green):

• Ch 6, sl st in 2nd ch from hook, sl st in next 4 chs. Fasten off leaving a tail for sewing. Insert wire to make them stand upright and sew to the top of the head.

Body (In Cream and Light Green):

• Start with Cream for the front belly stripes. Alternated with Light Green on the back.
• Rnd 1: 6 sc in MR (6)
• Rnd 2: [inc] x6 (12)
• Rnd 3: [sc, inc] x6 (18)
• Rnds 4-12: Work sc around, alternating Cream on the belly section and Light Green on the back section. Introduce horizontal cream/green ridges on the belly using surface slip stitches or front-loop-only stitches.
• Rnd 13: [sc, dec] x6 (12)
• Stuff firmly.
• Rnd 14: [dec] x6 (6). Fasten off and sew to the head.

Legs & Arms (Make 2 of each, in Light Green):

• Arms: Ch 8, sc in each ch across. Fasten off.
• Legs: Ch 12, sc down to create a jointed leg, folding slightly at the knee. Sew securely to the lower body.

Vest (In Blue, White, and Brown):

• Using Blue, ch 14. Row 1: Sc across, turn. Row 2: Join White/Brown to create a tiny jacquard/fair-isle pattern of your choice. Leave armholes by chaining 2 and skipping 2 sts on Row 3. Sew edges to fit tightly around the grasshopper’s body.

Violin & Bow (In Brown and Gold):

• Violin Body: Crochet two flat peanut-shaped panels using Brown. (Ch 4, work sc around both sides of chain, inc at ends to widen, sl st to join). Sew the two panels together with a tiny bit of stuffing. Add a thin wire or toothpick wrapped in dark brown thread for the neck.
• Bow: Wrap a piece of thin craft wire with Brown thread, leaving a small exposed line of gold thread to mimic the bow hair.

Assembly:

• Sew the hat to the head between the antennae. Vest the grasshopper, then sew the arms holding the violin and bow in playing position. Attach the keychain ring to the top of the head.
