Materials

• DK weight cotton yarn in Royal Blue, White, Red, and Yellow
• Size 3.5 mm (E/4) and 4.0 mm (G/6) crochet hooks
• Tapestry needle for embroidery and weaving ends
• Stitch markers

Instructions

Sizing Note: This pattern is written for size Small/Medium. You can easily adjust the width by increasing/decreasing the starting chain, and the length by adding or removing rows.

Front Panel:

Using Royal Blue yarn and 4.0 mm hook, ch 71.

Row 1 (RS): Hdc in 3rd ch from hook and in each ch across. Turn. (69 hdc)

Row 2-35: Ch 2 (does not count as st), hdc in each st across. Turn.

Shape Armholes:

Row 36: Sl st in first 5 sts, ch 2, hdc in each st until 5 sts remain, leave remaining sts unworked. Turn. (59 hdc)

Row 37-45: Ch 2, hdc in each st across. Turn.

Shape Neckline:

Row 46: Ch 2, hdc in next 18 sts, leave remaining sts unworked. Turn (working first shoulder).

Row 47-52: Ch 2, dec 1 hdc at neck edge, hdc in remaining sts across. Turn. Fasten off. Repeat for the other side of the neckline, leaving the center 23 sts unworked.

Back Panel:

Repeat instructions for the Front Panel, but omit the deep neckline shaping. Work rows straight up to Row 50, then shape the back neck slightly by leaving the center 25 sts unworked for the final 2 rows.

Sleeves (Make 2):

Using Royal Blue yarn, ch 45.

Row 1-12: Work in hdc across, increasing 1 st at each end of every 3rd row. Fasten off.

Sleeve Trim: Attach White yarn to the sleeve cuff, sc 1 row, change to Red, sc 1 row, change to White, sc 1 row.

Assembly:

Sew the shoulder seams together. Sew the sleeves to the armholes, then sew the sleeve and side seams. Weave in all loose ends.

Neckline Trim:

Attach White yarn to the back neck. Sc evenly around the neckline. Change to Red yarn, sc around. Change to White yarn, sc around. Fasten off.

Scalloped Bottom Border:

Attach White yarn to the bottom hem. Sc evenly around the entire bottom hem. Join with sl st. Change to Red yarn.

Round 2: *Skip 2 sts, 5 dc in next st, skip 2 sts, sl st in next st; repeat from * around to create the beautiful scalloped edge. Fasten off.

Rooster Applique & Letters:

White Background: Using White yarn, make a magic ring. Ch 2, 12 dc in ring. Sl st to join. Ch 2, 2 dc in each st around (24 dc). Continue increasing in a circle until you reach a flat disc of about 4 inches in diameter. Sew this disc onto the center of the chest.

Rooster Body: Using Blue yarn, crochet a small teardrop shape for the body. Attach Red yarn for the tail feathers and comb. Use Yellow yarn for the beak and legs. Applique the rooster elements onto the white background circle.

FRANCE Letters: Using White yarn, embroider ‘FRANCE’ in block letters directly below the rooster applique using a chain stitch or surface slip stitch technique.
