Materials

• Sport weight yarn in Red
• Sport weight yarn in White
• Sport weight yarn in Blue
• Sport weight yarn in Black (for studs)
• 2.5mm crochet hook
• Small amount of fiberfill for stuffing
• Tapestry needle
• Scissors
• Keychain ring and swivel clasp

Abbreviations

• ch – chain
• sl st – slip stitch
• sc – single crochet
• inc – increase (2 sc in one stitch)
• dec – decrease (sc2tog)
• BLO – back loop only
• FO – fasten off

Instructions

Gauge: Not critical for this project, but aim for tight stitches to prevent stuffing from showing.

Note on Color Changes: When changing colors for the flag, work the last yarn over of the previous stitch with the new color. Carry the unused color loosely on the wrong side or cut and reattach as needed.

Sole (Start with Red yarn)

• Round 1: Ch 10. Sc in 2nd ch from hook, sc in next 7 ch, 3 sc in last ch. Turn to work along the other side of the chain. Sc in next 7 ch, 2 sc in last ch. (20 stitches)
• Round 2: Inc, sc in next 7, inc x 3, sc in next 7, inc x 2. (26 stitches)
• Round 3: Sc in each stitch around BLO. (26 stitches) – This creates a defined edge for the upper.
• Round 4: Change to White yarn. Sc in each stitch around. (26 stitches)
• Round 5: Change to Red yarn. Sc in each stitch around. (26 stitches)

Boot Upper (Continue with Red yarn)

• Round 6: Sc in next 8, dec x 5, sc in next 8. (21 stitches)
• Round 7: Sc in next 7, dec x 3, sc in next 8. (18 stitches)
• Round 8: Sc in next 6, dec x 3, sc in next 6. (15 stitches)
• Round 9: Sc in next 5, dec x 2, sc in next 6. (13 stitches)

Creating the Top Opening and Flag Detail

From here, you will work back and forth in rows to create the opening of the boot and the ‘tongue’ area for laces. We will also incorporate the Norwegian flag design on the sides. The flag uses Blue and White yarn.

• Row 10 (Right Side): Ch 1, turn. Sc in next 5. (5 stitches) – This is one side of the lace opening.
• Row 11: Ch 1, turn. Sc in each sc across. (5 stitches)
• Rows 12-14: Repeat Row 11.
• Next, create the flag pattern on the side: On Row 10 (and subsequent rows that form the side of the boot), you will work color changes.
• Work 3 sc in Red, 1 sc in Blue, 1 sc in Red.
• In the next row, work 1 sc in White, 1 sc in Blue, 1 sc in White, 1 sc in Red.
• Adjust stitches and rows to create the horizontal and vertical bars of the flag. This will involve carrying yarn or using separate small bobbins for each color. The blue cross is bordered by white.
• To create the ‘tongue’ for the laces: Between the two sides of the opening, you’ll need to create a flat piece. This can be done by working a separate piece and attaching it, or by skipping stitches and then rejoining. For simplicity, we’ll suggest creating small gaps for laces directly on the red upper.
• Continue shaping the heel area, working in rounds again where the boot closes. Stuff the boot lightly before fully closing the heel or adding the back panel.

Lace Holes and Laces

• Using your tapestry needle, thread a piece of White yarn through the top front of the boot, creating a zigzag pattern for laces. Tie a small bow.

Studs (Black yarn)

• Cut several small pieces of Black yarn.
• Thread each piece through the bottom of the Red sole, knot it tightly on the outside to form a small stud, and trim excess. Create 6-8 studs evenly spaced.

Number ’10’ (White yarn)

• Using White yarn and a tapestry needle, embroider the number ’10’ neatly onto the red heel of the boot.

Keychain Loop (Red, White, Blue yarn)

• Cut three 15cm (6-inch) strands of yarn (one Red, one White, one Blue).
• Tie them together at one end, braid them, and tie a knot at the other end.
• Attach one end of the braid to the top back of the crochet boot (near the heel).
• Attach the other end of the braid to the keychain ring and swivel clasp.

Finishing: Weave in all remaining loose ends. Ensure all components are securely attached.
