Instructions

This shawl is constructed from individual Motif Squares worked in a graphghan/tapestry crochet style, then joined, and finished with a decorative border. Each Motif Square is approximately 8×8 inches, but adjust hook size if needed to achieve desired square size.

Motif Square (Make approx. 30-36 squares, varying colors and motifs)

Each square is worked flat in rows of half double crochet, changing colors according to a pixel graph to create the reindeer or snowflake design. You will need separate pixel charts for the reindeer and snowflake motifs. We’ll outline the general steps.

Yarn Colors for Squares:

Main Square Body (Graphghan/Tapestry Style)

With MC (e.g., Green A), ch 31.
Row 1: Hdc in 2nd ch from hook and in each ch across. (30 hdc). Turn.
Row 2: Ch 1, hdc in each st across. (30 hdc). Turn.
Rows 3-30: Continue working hdc in rows, following your chosen pixel chart for the specific motif (reindeer or snowflake). Change colors as indicated by the chart, carrying unused yarn colors loosely along the back or using separate bobbins for each color section. Ensure color changes are neat to create clear motifs. At the end of Row 30, fasten off MC.

Square Border

Each completed Motif Square will now receive a Gold (D) border.

Join Gold (D) yarn with a sl st in any corner st of the square.
Round 1: Ch 1, (3 sc in corner st, sc in each st across side) around all four sides. When working along the sides of the hdc rows, aim for approximately 30 sc per side, evenly spaced. Join with sl st to first sc.
Round 2: Ch 2 (counts as 1st hdc), hdc in each sc around, working 3 hdc in each corner sc from previous round. Join with sl st to top of starting ch 2.
Round 3: Ch 1, sc in each hdc around, working 3 sc in the middle hdc of each corner. Join with sl st to first sc. Fasten off, weave in all ends.

Assembly of Squares

Arrange your Motif Squares into the desired layout (e.g., a large rectangular or ‘L’ shape for a poncho/shawl). A common layout for a shawl is roughly 5-6 squares wide and 7-8 squares long, or shaped to drape over shoulders.

Using Gold (D) yarn, join squares together using your preferred method (e.g., sl st through back loops, sc seam, or whip stitch). Ensure seams are consistent and even.

Final Edging

Once all squares are joined to form the complete shawl, add a final decorative border around the entire outer edge.

Join Green (A) yarn with a sl st in any corner of the assembled shawl.
