Materials

• Super Bulky (Size 6) yarn in Light Beige/Taupe (approx. 300 yards)
• Super Bulky (Size 6) yarn in Medium/Dark Brown (approx. 400 yards)
• Small amount of dark brown yarn for the embroidered nose and eyes
• 8.0 mm (L-11) crochet hook

Instructions

Note: The hedgehog is worked from the nose backwards. The head/face is worked in smooth single crochet, and then the body transitions into alternating rows of single crochet and bobble stitches to create the spiky texture. Use stitch markers to keep track of rounds.

Snout & Head (Light Beige)

Start with dark brown yarn for the nose tip.

Round 1: Magic ring with 6 sc (6 sts).
Round 2: *sc, inc*, repeat around (9 sts).
Round 3: sc in each st around (9 sts). Change to Light Beige yarn.
Round 4: *2 sc, inc*, repeat around (12 sts).
Round 5: sc in each st around (12 sts).
Round 6: *3 sc, inc*, repeat around (15 sts).
Round 7: *4 sc, inc*, repeat around (18 sts).
Round 8: *2 sc, inc*, repeat around (24 sts).
Round 9: sc in each st around (24 sts).
Round 10: *3 sc, inc*, repeat around (30 sts).
Round 11: *4 sc, inc*, repeat around (36 sts).
Round 12-18: Continue increasing gradually by 6 sts each round until you reach 72 sts, forming the wedge-shaped head.

Textured Body (Medium/Dark Brown & Light Beige)

For the body, we will split work between the spiky back (Brown with Bobble stitches) and the smooth belly (Beige with sc). Alternatively, work the entire back section in Brown with Bobble stitches and sew a flat Beige panel underneath.

Spiky Back Rows (Brown):
Attach brown yarn to the top 48 stitches of the body to work back-and-forth rows or rounds for the spikes.
Row 1: *bo in first st, sc in next*, repeat across. (Make sure bobbles pop out on the right side).
Row 2 (and all even rows): sc in each st across to anchor the bobbles.
Row 3: *sc in first st, bo in next*, repeat across to offset the spikes.
Repeat these alternating rows, increasing and then decreasing as needed to form a large rounded egg shape for the body. Fasten off and leave a long tail for assembly.

Smooth Belly Panel (Light Beige):
Crochet a flat oval or rectangular panel in single crochet to cover the underside of the hedgehog, matching the length and width of your spiky body segment.

Ears (Light Beige – Make 2)

Round 1: Magic ring with 6 sc.
Round 2: inc in each st around (12 sts).
Round 3: *sc, inc*, repeat around (18 sts). Fold in half to make a cup shape and sew to the sides of the head where the beige transitions to brown.

Feet (Light Beige – Make 4)

Round 1: Magic ring with 6 sc.
Round 2: inc in each st around (12 sts).
Round 3-6: sc in each st around (12 sts). Fasten off, leaving a tail for sewing. Stuff lightly.

Assembly & Details

• Embroider sweet curved eyes and eyebrows using dark brown yarn on the sides of the beige face.
• Sew the smooth belly panel to the spiky back section, leaving a 4-inch gap. Stuff the entire hedgehog firmly with polyester fiberfill, making sure the snout keeps its shape. Sew the opening closed.
• Sew the four feet securely to the bottom belly panel so the hedgehog can sit flat on a bed or sofa.
• Weave in all remaining loose yarn ends. Your giant, huggable hedgehog pillow is complete!
