Materials

• Fingering weight yarn in White, Dark Blue, Light Gray, Orange, and Red
• 1.5 mm crochet hook (or size needed to obtain tight stitches)
• Polyester fiberfill stuffing
• Toothpick or thin wooden dowel for the flag pole
• Keychain ring with link chain
• Tapestry needle and embroidery scissors

Abbreviations

• ch – chain
• sc – single crochet
• inc – increase (2 sc in one stitch)
• dec – decrease (sc 2 together)
• bo – bobble stitch (4-dc cluster in same stitch)
• BLO – back loop only
• sl st – slip stitch

Instructions

Step 1: The Moon Base (Light Gray)

Rnd 1: Work 6 sc in a magic ring (6).

Rnd 2: Work [inc] in each stitch around (12).

Rnd 3: Work [sc 1, inc] 6 times (18).

Rnd 4: Work [sc 2, inc] 6 times (24).

Rnd 5: Work [sc 3, inc] 6 times (30).

Rnd 6: Work [sc 4, inc] 6 times (36).

Rnds 7-12: Work sc around, randomly adding 2 or 3 ‘bo’ (bobble stitches) on Rnds 8 and 10 to create realistic crater textures.

Rnd 13: Work [sc 4, dec] 6 times (30).

Rnd 14: Work [sc 3, dec] 6 times (24). Begin stuffing firmly with fiberfill.

Rnd 15: Work [sc 2, dec] 6 times (18).

Rnd 16: Work [sc 1, dec] 6 times (12).

Rnd 17: Work [dec] 6 times (6). Fasten off and weave in ends.

Step 2: Helmet Visor (Dark Blue)

Ch 5. Starting in 2nd ch from hook, sc 3, 3 sc in the last ch. Turn to work along the opposite side of the chain: sc 2, inc in the last ch (10). Fasten off, leaving a long tail for sewing.

Step 3: Astronaut Helmet & Head (White)

Rnd 1: Work 6 sc in a magic ring (6).

Rnd 2: Work [inc] in each stitch around (12).

Rnd 3: Work [sc 1, inc] 6 times (18).

Rnd 4: Work [sc 2, inc] 6 times (24).

Sew the visor to the front of the head between Rnds 6 and 10.

Rnd 13: Work [sc 2, dec] 6 times (18). Stuff the head firmly.

Step 4: Legs & Body (White, Dark Blue, Orange)

Legs (Make 2): Start with Dark Blue. Rnd 1: 6 sc in magic ring (6). Rnd 2: [sc 1, inc] 3 times (9). Change to Orange: Rnd 3: sc around in BLO (9). Change to White: Rnds 4-7: sc around (9). Fasten off the first leg. Do not fasten off the second leg; ch 2, join to the first leg and continue to work the body.

Body: Rnd 8: sc around both legs and ch-2 spaces (22). Rnds 9-14: sc around (22). Rnd 15: [sc 9, dec] 2 times (20). Rnd 16: [sc 3, dec] 4 times (16). Rnd 17: [sc 2, dec] 4 times (12). Stuff firmly, fasten off, and leave a tail.

Step 5: Assembly & Details

Assemble the astronaut by sewing the head, body, arms, and backpack together. Use red, blue, and white thread to embroider a miniature logo on the chest. Mount the astronaut onto the moon base with strong stitches. Attach the tiny flag (crafted from yarn or felt wrapped around a toothpick) to the astronaut’s hand, and secure the keychain ring to the top of the helmet.
