Crochet Pattern: Patriotic Crochet Canadian Flag Crop Top Pattern

Materials

• Medium weight (Category 4) cotton yarn in Red (approx. 150g) and White (approx. 100g)
• 4.0 mm (US G/6) crochet hook
• Tapestry needle
• Scissors
• Stitch markers

Instructions

Size Note: This pattern is written for a standard size Small/Medium (32-34″ bust). You can easily adjust the width by adding or subtracting chains in equal numbers on the side red panels.

Front Panel (Colorwork):

The front panel is worked in rows from the bottom up using color changes to create the red-white-red flag panels.

• Row 1 (RS): With Red, ch 71. Dc in 4th ch from hook and in next 14 ch. Switch to White: dc in next 38 ch. Switch to Red: dc in last 15 ch. Turn. (68 sts)
• Rows 2-16: Ch 3 (counts as dc), dc in next 14 sts with Red. Switch to White: dc in next 38 sts. Switch to Red: dc in last 15 sts. Turn.
• Row 17 (Top Red Ribbing Band): Fasten off White. Join Red yarn to first st. Ch 3, dc in each st across. Turn.
• Row 18-20: Ch 3, *fpdc in next st, bpdc in next st; repeat from * across to last st, dc in last st. Fasten off.

Back Panel:

Work exactly same as Front Panel, but work entirely in Red yarn (or repeat the colorwork pattern if you prefer a double-sided flag look).

Maple Leaf Applique (In Red):

• Round 1: In magic ring, ch 2 (does not count as st), 12 dc into ring. Join with sl st to first dc.
• Round 2: Ch 1, 2 sc in each st around. Join. (24 sts)
• Points (Create 3 main points and 2 side points): To create the iconic leaf look, work in chain loops. *Ch 6, sc in 2nd ch from hook, hdc in next ch, dc in next 2 ch, tr in last ch. Skip 2 sts on the ring, sl st into next st.* Repeat this sequence to create the five points around the top half of the ring.
• Stem: Join yarn to the bottom center of the leaf, ch 8, sc in 2nd ch from hook and in each remaining ch. Sl st back into the ring base. Fasten off leaving a long tail for sewing.
• White Border: Join White yarn to any edge of the maple leaf. Sc evenly around the entire leaf edge, placing 3 sc in the tip of each point to keep them sharp. Fasten off.

Assembly & Sewing:

• Block all pieces before assembling to ensure neat edges.
• Center the Maple Leaf Applique on the white section of the Front Panel. Pin in place and sew down securely using a tapestry needle and red/white yarn.
• Place Front and Back panels together with RS facing. Sew side seams using the mattress stitch, leaving the top 7-8 inches open for armholes.

Bottom Scalloped Edging:

• Join White yarn to the bottom hem of the joined panels.
• Round 1: Sc evenly around the bottom edge. Join with sl st.
• Round 2 (Shell/Scallop): Ch 1, *skip 2 sts, 5 dc in next st, skip 2 sts, sc in next st; repeat from * around. Join with sl st and fasten off.

Straps (Make 2):

• Join Red yarn to the top front corner of the bodice.
• Ch 6. Dc in 4th ch from hook and in next 2 ch. Turn.
• Work dc rows until the strap measures approximately 11 inches (or desired length to reach the back panel). Sew the end to the corresponding back panel corner.
• Strap Border: Join White yarn at the underarm, sc evenly along the inner and outer edges of the straps for a clean, contrasting border. Fasten off and weave in all loose ends.
