Materials

Instructions

Ribbed Waistband:

Using the 3.5 mm hook and Red yarn, ch 13. Row 1: Sc in second ch from hook and in each ch across, turn. Row 2: Ch 1, sc in BLO of each st across, turn. Repeat Row 2, alternating color stripes (Red, Blue, Off-White) to match the photo, until the band reaches your desired waist circumference (slightly stretched). Join the ends with a sl st to form a ring.

Main Body:

Switch to the 4.0 mm hook. Attach Off-White yarn to the top edge of the waistband. Round 1: Work sc evenly around the top edge of the ribbing, join with a sl st. Work the front and back panels separately to allow for armhole and neck shaping.

For the front panel, map out the central Off-White panel and the side stripe panels. Work in rows of hdc. The side panels feature alternating vertical stripes of Red, Blue, and Off-White. The center panel is kept solid Off-White to serve as the background for the flag motifs.

V-Neck and Armhole Shaping:

Divide the front panel into two halves at the center. Decrease 1 st at the neckline edge every row to create the V-neck shape, while simultaneously decreasing at the armhole edges to shape the armholes. Continue until the shoulder straps are about 2 inches wide. Work the straps in stripes of Red, Blue, and Off-White to your desired shoulder length. Repeat for the back panel (with a higher neckline if desired) and sew the shoulder straps and sides together.

Neckline and Armhole Edging:

Using Black yarn, attach to the V-neck edge. Work 1 row of sc around the entire neckline, then work a scalloped edging: *sl st, skip 1 st, 5 dc in next st, skip 1 st, sl st in next* repeat around. Repeat a clean sc edging in Black for the armholes.

Taegeukgi Central Emblem:

With Red yarn and 3.5 mm hook, make a magic ring. Round 1: 6 sc in ring. Round 2: 2 sc in each st around (12 sts). Switch to Blue for half of the circle and Red for the other half to create the yin-yang Taegeuk shape. Increase evenly to Round 4 to create a flat circle, then sew onto the center of the chest.

Trigrams and Text:

Using Black yarn, crochet 4 small rectangular strips for each of the four trigram sets (Geon, Ri, Gam, Gon) and sew them diagonally around the central emblem. Use Blue and Red yarn to embroider or surface slip-stitch the word ‘KOREA’ underneath the emblem, and ’82’ on the upper left chest. Sew the tiger patch onto the upper right chest.
