Materials

• Fine sport weight yarn in Green (main color)
• Fine sport weight yarn in Yellow (sole, laces, trim, text)
• Fine sport weight yarn in White (toe, stripes)
• Fine sport weight yarn in Black (stripes)
• 1.75mm crochet hook (or size suitable for your yarn)
• Small amount of polyester fiberfill for stuffing
• Tapestry needle
• Scissors
• Keychain ring with swivel clasp
• Optional: Small South African flag charm or fabric scrap

• inc: increase (2 sc in one stitch)

• BLO: back loop only

Instructions

This pattern is worked in continuous rounds unless otherwise specified. Use a stitch marker to mark the beginning of each round.

Sole (Yellow Yarn)

• Rnd 1: Ch 8. Sc in 2nd ch from hook, sc in next 5 sts, 3 sc in last ch. Working on the other side of the chain: sc in next 5 sts, 2 sc in last st (this is the first ch you worked into). (16 sts)

• Rnd 2: Inc, sc in next 5 sts, inc x 3, sc in next 5 sts, inc x 2. (22 sts)

• Rnd 3: Sc in each st around. (22 sts)

Sole Studs (Green Yarn – surface details)

Using green yarn and a tapestry needle, embroider small French knots or tiny loops on the sole to create the studs effect. For loops: sl st into a stitch on the sole, ch 2, sl st back into the same stitch, sl st to the next location, repeat for desired number of studs.

Shoe Base (Green Yarn)

• Rnd 4: Change to Green yarn. Working in BLO, sc in each st around. (22 sts)

• Rnd 5-6: Sc in each st around. (22 sts for 2 rnds)

Toe Section (White Yarn)

• Rnd 11: Sc in each st around. (16 sts)

• Rnd 12: Sc in next 6 sts, dec, sc in next 6 sts, dec. (14 sts)

• Rnd 13: Sc in each st around. (14 sts)

Lightly stuff the shoe as you go.

Lace Eyelets & Top Edging

• Rnd 14: (Green Yarn) Sc in next 2 sts, ch 1, skip 1 st (this creates an eyelet), sc in next 2 sts, ch 1, skip 1 st, sc in next 4 sts, ch 1, skip 1 st, sc in next 2 sts, ch 1, skip 1 st, sc in next 2 sts. (10 sc, 4 ch-1 spaces)

• Rnd 15: (Yellow Yarn) Join Yellow yarn with a sl st. Ch 1, sc in each sc and in each ch-1 space around. Join with sl st to first sc. (14 sts) FO.

Laces (Yellow Yarn)

Ch 25-30 with Yellow yarn. Thread through the eyelets created in Rnd 14. Tie a small bow or knot at the top.

Stripes & Text Embellishments

• Black Stripes: With Black yarn and tapestry needle, embroider three parallel diagonal lines on each side of the green shoe body (below the lace eyelets) to mimic athletic shoe stripes.

• White Stripes: Above the black stripes, embroider a few short horizontal white lines or sl sts.

• “SA” Text: With Yellow yarn and tapestry needle, embroider “SA” on the outer side of the shoe, below the stripes, as seen in the image.

• Yellow Top Trim: With Yellow yarn, sl st around the top edge of the shoe, above the lace section, for a neat finish.

Keychain Loop (Green Yarn)

Join Green yarn to the center top back of the heel. Ch 15, sl st into the same st to form a loop. FO. Securely attach the keychain ring to this loop.

Finishing

Weave in all remaining loose ends. Ensure the shoe is well-shaped. If using a fabric flag, sew it securely to the heel area. Attach the keychain ring.
