Materials

• Medium weight cotton yarn in Red (approx. 200g)
• Medium weight cotton yarn in White (approx. 50g)
• US Size G/6 (4.0mm) crochet hook
• Tapestry needle
• Measuring tape
• Scissors

Instructions

Sizing Note: This pattern is written for a standard size Small/Medium, but can easily be adjusted by adding or subtracting starting chains for width and rows for length.

Ribbing (Bottom Band):

Using MC and CC, work in vertical rows to create the striped ribbed effect.

• With MC, chain 11.
• Row 1: Sc in second ch from hook and each ch across, turn. (10 sts)
• Row 2: Ch 1, working in BLO, sc in each st across. Join CC on the last stitch, turn.
• Repeat Row 2, alternating MC and CC every 2 rows, until the band matches your waist circumference. Fasten off.

Main Body:

Join MC to the long edge of the ribbing band to work upwards.

• Row 1: Work hdc evenly across the edge of the ribbed band, turn.
• Row 2-15: Ch 1, hdc in each st across, turn.
• Introduce CC for the Swiss Cross design in the center 15 stitches using tapestry crochet. Keep MC on the outer edges.
• Follow a 15×15 stitch cross grid: center 5 rows are 15 sts wide in CC, top and bottom 5 rows are 5 sts wide in CC centered.
• Resume MC for all stitches after completing the cross, working 6 more rows of hdc.

Striped Chest and Text Panel:

• Switch to CC: Work 2 rows of sc.
• Switch to MC: Work 6 rows of sc (embroider SUI SWITZERLAND on this section later).
• Switch to CC: Work 2 rows of sc.
• Switch to MC: Work 2 rows of sc. Fasten off.

Back Panel:

Repeat the same instructions as the Front Panel, but omit the Swiss cross and text embroidery, keeping the main body in solid MC.

Straps (Make 2):

• With MC, chain 50 (or length needed for shoulder straps).
• Row 1: Sc in each ch across, turn.
• Row 2: Join CC, sc in BLO across, turn.
• Row 3: Join MC, sc in BLO across. Fasten off.

Assembly and Embroidery:

• Sew the front and back panels together at the sides.
• Using a tapestry needle and CC yarn, embroider ‘SUI’ and ‘SWITZERLAND’ using duplicate stitch or backstitch onto the designated red chest section.
• Sew the straps to the front and back necklines, aligning them with the edges.
• Weave in all remaining ends securely.
