Materials

• DK weight yarn in Cream (Main Color – MC)
• DK weight yarn in Red (Color A)
• DK weight yarn in Navy Blue (Color B)
• 3.5 mm (E/4) crochet hook
• Yarn needle for weaving in ends
• Embroidery needle and dark blue embroidery floss
• Stitch markers

Abbreviations

• ch – chain
• sc – single crochet
• hdc – half double crochet
• dc – double crochet
• pc – popcorn stitch (5 dc in same stitch, slip stitch to first dc to close)
• sl st – slip stitch
• MC – Main Color (Cream)
• A – Red
• B – Navy Blue

Instructions

Size Note: This pattern is written for size Small/Medium. You can easily adjust the width of the top by adding more rows to the textured side panels or the back panel.

Step 1: Front Central Panel (The Cross)

Using Cream yarn (MC), ch 31.

Row 1: Sc in second ch from hook and in each ch across. Turn. (30 sts)

Rows 2-10: Sc in each st across. Turn.

Row 11 (Start Cross colorwork): Sc 11 in MC, switch to Red (A), sc 8 in Red, switch to MC, sc 11 in MC. Turn.

Repeat Row 11 until Row 20.

Row 21-24 (Horizontal Bar): Sc in each st across using Red (A). Turn.

Row 25-34: Repeat Row 11 (Sc 11 MC, 8 Red, 11 MC). Turn.

Fasten off MC and Red.

Step 2: Bottom Slogan Area

Join Cream yarn (MC) to the bottom of the front panel to work downwards for the slogan area. Work 15 rows of sc across the 30 sts. Using your embroidery needle and Navy Blue embroidery floss, embroider the word ‘ENGLAND’ and the shield motif below the red cross as pictured.

Step 3: Side Panels (Puff/Popcorn texture)

Join Cream yarn to the upper side of the front panel. Work vertically to expand the width: alternating rows of 1 sc, popcorn stitch (pc), 1 sc, to match the beautiful bobbled pattern on the sides. Repeat for both left and right sides to meet your bust measurement.

Step 4: Back Panel

Using Cream yarn (MC), chain 60 (or the number needed to match your back width). Work in hdc rows until the back panel matches the height of your front panel assembly. Sew front and back panels together at the side seams.

Step 5: Bottom Striped Band

Join Navy Blue (B) to the bottom edge. Work 2 rounds of hdc. Change to Cream (MC), work 1 round of hdc. Change to Red (A), work 1 round of hdc. Change to Navy Blue (B), work 2 rounds of hdc. Fasten off.

Step 6: Neckline and Straps Border

Attach Navy Blue (B) to the upper front corner. Chain for the strap (approx 35-40 chains or to fit your shoulder), attach to the back panel, then work sc around the neckline. Repeat the stripe pattern: 1 round Navy, 1 round Red, 1 round Cream, 1 round Navy to match the bottom edge. Fasten off and weave in all loose ends.
