Materials

• DK weight cotton yarn in Red (MC), Green (CC1), White (CC2), and Yellow (CC3)
• Size G/6 (4.0mm) crochet hook
• Tapestry needle
• Scissors
• Optional: Portugal flag/crest patch and number 7 patch

Instructions

Back Panel:

Using MC (Red), chain 71 (or desired length for width of lower waist). Row 1: Dc in 4th ch from hook and in each ch across, turn. (68 sts) Rows 2-25: Ch 3 (counts as dc), dc in each st across, turn. Fasten off and weave in ends.

Front Panel:

Using MC (Red), chain 71. Rows 1-12: Repeat as for Back Panel. Now, divide for the V-neck split. Row 13 (Left Side): Ch 3, dc in next 33 sts, dc2tog, turn, leaving remaining sts unworked. Row 14: Ch 3, dc2tog, dc in each st across, turn. Rows 15-25: Continue decreasing 1 st at the neck edge on every row until 20 sts remain. Fasten off. Right Side: Reattach yarn to the center and mirror the left side decreases to complete the V-neck. Fasten off.

Assembly:

Lay front and back panels with right sides facing. Sew shoulder seams and side seams using a tapestry needle and a mattress stitch, leaving opening for the armholes.

V-Neck Collar & Ribbing:

Join CC1 (Green) at the back of the neck. Round 1: Ch 1, work sc evenly around the neck opening, making sure to work a 3-sc decrease at the bottom point of the V. Join with sl st. Round 2: Join CC2 (White), repeat sc round, working a 3-sc decrease at the V peak. Round 3: Join CC3 (Yellow), repeat sc round with V-point decrease. Round 4: Join MC (Red), work a final round of sc. Fasten off.

Armhole Edging:

Repeat the color striping sequence (CC1, CC2, CC3, MC) in rounds of sc around each armhole opening to create matching ribbed borders.

Bottom Scalloped Band:

Join CC1 (Green) to the bottom hem of the vest. Round 1: Ch 1, sc in each st around, join. Round 2: Join CC2 (White), sc in each st around, join. Round 3: Join CC3 (Yellow), sc in each st around, join. Round 4 (Scallop Edge): Join MC (Red), *skip 2 sts, 5 dc in next st, skip 2 sts, sl st in next; repeat from * around to create the wavy border. Fasten off.

Finishing Touches:

Weave in all remaining loose yarn tails. For the ultimate authentic look, sew or iron on the Portugal crest and “7” decal on the front chest area as shown in the photo.
