Materials

• Sport weight cotton yarn in Golden Yellow (approx. 250-350g)

• Belgium Red Devils embroidered patch (approx. 5 inches)

Instructions

Gauge: 20 dc x 10 rows = 4 inches (10 cm) square using 3.5 mm hook.

Note: The top is worked from the top down, starting with the ribbed collar, transitioning into a circular yoke, dividing for the body and sleeves, and finishing with a scalloped bottom edge.

Step 1: The Tricolor Neckline Collar

Using Black yarn, chain 110 (or a number of chains that fits comfortably over your head in multiples of 6). Join with a sl st to form a ring, being careful not to twist.

Rnd 1: Ch 1, sc in each ch around. Join with sl st. (110 sts)

Switch to Red yarn.

Rnd 2: Ch 1, sc in each st around. Join. (110 sts)

Switch to Golden Yellow yarn.

Rnd 3: Ch 1, sc in each st around. Join. (110 sts)

Step 2: The Circular Shell Yoke

Continue with Golden Yellow yarn. In this section, we will establish the lace shell detail of the upper yoke.

Rnd 4: Ch 1, sc in first st, *sk 2 sts, shell in next st, sk 2 sts, sc in next st; rep from * around. Join with sl st. (You will have 18 shells/fans).

Rnd 5: Ch 3 (counts as dc), 2 dc in same st, *ch 2, sc in center dc of shell, ch 2, 3 dc in next sc; rep from * around, ending with ch 2, sc in center of shell, ch 2. Join to top of starting ch-3 with sl st.

Rnd 6: Ch 3, dc in each st and 2 dc in each ch-2 space around to increase the yoke diameter. Join with sl st.

Rnds 7-12: Work in even dc in each st around, increasing evenly by 12 sts each round to accommodate the shoulders. Continue until the yoke measures approximately 6.5 inches from the neckline, or fits comfortably down to your underarm.

Step 3: Dividing for the Body and Sleeves

Fold your yoke flat to identify the sleeve sections and body sections. Mark the sleeve areas with stitch markers (typically 1/4 of the stitches for each sleeve, and 1/4 of the stitches for front and back panels each).

Rnd 13: Ch 3, dc across the front panel to the first marker, ch 6 (for underarm space), skip sleeve stitches, dc across the back panel to the next marker, ch 6, skip second sleeve stitches, join with sl st to first dc.

Step 4: The Crop Top Body

Rnds 14-26: Ch 3, dc in each st around (including the underarm chains). Work in continuous rounds of dc until the body reaches 1 inch above your desired crop length.

Step 5: Scalloped Bottom Hem

To create the beautiful scalloped edging matching the neck yoke:

Rnd 27: Ch 1, sc in first st, *sk 2 sts, shell (5 dc) in next st, sk 2 sts, sc in next st; rep from * around. If the stitch count is slightly off, adjust by skipping 1 or 3 stitches occasionally to make the pattern fit evenly. Join and fasten off.

Step 6: Sleeves

Join Golden Yellow yarn at the center of the underarm chain.

Rnd 1: Ch 3, dc evenly around the sleeve opening. Join with sl st.

Rnds 2-8: Ch 3, dc in each st around. Adjust the length of the sleeves here to your preference.

Rnd 9: Ch 1, sc in each st around. Fasten off.

Optional Belgian Flag Accent: On the left sleeve edge, use small strands of Black, Yellow, and Red yarn to stitch a tiny striped tab flag, as shown in the photo.

Step 7: Assembly & Finishing
